Both were developed by the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences and have an unusually long research history in Russia and Eastern Europe -- a distinction that provides some pharmacology data, even if that literature predates modern trial standards.
Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide derived from the ACTH(4-7) sequence with a methionine-glutamate-histidine-phenylalanine extension that increases its stability and bioactivity. In research models it is studied for its role in BDNF and NGF pathways -- upregulating brain-derived and nerve growth factors. Research effects include neuroprotection, acetylcholinergic and neuropeptidergic receptor binding in memory consolidation models, and attention-related parameters. Semax has been studied in models of ischemic injury, which provides some translational context, though the evidence base is not equivalent to Western Phase III trial standards.
Selank is derived from tuftsin, an endogenous immunoregulatory peptide, with a GABA-B receptor component that gives it anxiolytic-like activity in research models. It modulates GABA system activity and reduces anxiety-like behavior in rodent models without the sedation or dependence potential associated with benzodiazepines.
