Oxytocin is a nine-amino acid neuropeptide produced in the hypothalamus and released from the posterior pituitary. Its roles span social bonding, uterine contractions, lactation, and neuromodulation -- a breadth that has made it one of the most studied peptides in behavioral and social neuroscience over the past 30 years. Pharmaceutical-grade oxytocin acetate is supplied here for research applications requiring the endogenous sequence.
The "love hormone" or "bonding hormone" framing is popular but oversimplified. Oxytocin's effects in research models are context-dependent and sometimes counterintuitive -- studies report both enhanced prosocial behavior toward in-group members and hostility toward out-group members. The oxytocin receptor (OXTR) is expressed in the hypothalamus, limbic system, and throughout the periphery including uterus, mammary gland, and cardiovascular tissue. This broad expression pattern means oxytocin has multiple research contexts beyond behavioral neuroscience: it is studied in research models for anti-inflammatory properties, HPA axis stress-response modulation, cardiovascular function, and roles in metabolic homeostasis.
In reproductive biology, oxytocin's pharmacology is well-characterised: it is studied for stimulating uterine smooth-muscle contraction and milk ejection through OXTR signalling, mechanisms that have been extensively documented in research models and provide a large body of pharmacological data on the peptide.

The "love hormone" framing captures a real research finding but oversimplifies the pharmacology significantly. In research models, oxytocin is associated with enhanced social bonding, trust, and affiliative behavior in many studies -- particularly within recognized groups. But studies also report increased in-group favoritism and out-group hostility in some experimental contexts, heightened envy and gloating, and effects that vary substantially by individual, context, and baseline social environment. The research picture is that oxytocin amplifies social salience broadly rather than simply promoting positive bonding -- which explains why it is associated with pro-social and anti-social effects depending on context.
Oxytocin has well-documented effects in research models outside social neuroscience. In reproductive biology, it is studied for stimulating uterine contractions and milk ejection -- the basis for a large body of research on its smooth-muscle pharmacology. It is studied for modulating HPA axis function and attenuating the stress response in research models. Anti-inflammatory properties have been reported, with research showing effects on cytokine profiles and immune function. Cardiovascular research includes modulation of heart rate and blood pressure in model systems. More recently, oxytocin has been studied in metabolic contexts -- OXTR is expressed in adipose tissue and oxytocin is studied for effects on energy homeostasis and body weight in rodent models.
Intranasal delivery is widely used in behavioral neuroscience research because it provides CNS delivery via olfactory pathway transport -- bypassing the blood-brain barrier that limits systemic oxytocin from reaching brain tissue. However, intranasal pharmacokinetics are variable and CNS delivery amounts have been debated in the literature. Peripheral injection (IV, SC, or IP in animal studies) is used for studying peripheral effects. Central effects in animal research are often studied via intracerebroventricular (ICV) cannula, which provides direct CNS delivery. The route of delivery significantly affects which effects are studied.
Oxytocin acetate is supplied for laboratory research use only. Not approved for unsanctioned human use. Handle in compliance with institutional biosafety guidelines.
