The "love hormone" framing captures a real effect but oversimplifies the pharmacology significantly. Oxytocin does enhance social bonding, trust, and affiliative behavior in many studies -- particularly within recognized groups. But it also increases in-group favoritism and out-group hostility in some experimental contexts, can heighten envy and gloating, and its effects vary substantially by individual, context, and baseline social environment. The research picture is that oxytocin amplifies social salience broadly rather than simply promoting positive bonding -- which explains why it can produce pro-social and anti-social effects depending on context.

Oxytocin has well-documented effects outside social neuroscience. In reproductive biology, it stimulates uterine contractions and milk ejection -- the basis for its clinical obstetric use. It modulates HPA axis function and can attenuate the stress response. It has anti-inflammatory properties, with research showing effects on cytokine profiles and immune function. Cardiovascular effects include modulation of heart rate and blood pressure. More recently, oxytocin has been studied in metabolic contexts -- OXTR is expressed in adipose tissue and oxytocin affects energy homeostasis and body weight in rodent models.

Intranasal delivery is widely used in behavioral neuroscience research because it provides CNS delivery via olfactory pathway transport -- bypassing the blood-brain barrier that limits systemic oxytocin from reaching brain tissue. However, intranasal pharmacokinetics are variable and CNS delivery amounts have been debated in the literature. Peripheral injection (IV, SC, or IP in animal studies) is used for studying peripheral effects. Central effects in animal research are often studied via intracerebroventricular (ICV) cannula, which provides direct CNS delivery. The route of delivery significantly affects which effects are studied.
