Cartalax is a tetrapeptide (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) from the Khavinson series targeting cartilaginous tissue — joints, intervertebral discs, and chondrocyte biology. Cartilage is avascular and has extremely limited regenerative capacity in adults: chondrocytes maintain the extracellular matrix through a balance of synthesis and degradation that shifts unfavorably with age. Matrix metalloprotease activity increases, anabolic signaling declines, and the tissue deteriorates. Unlike most tissues, there's no significant cell renewal to offset that loss. This is the biological problem Cartalax research addresses.
The Khavinson mechanism applied to cartilage: short peptides can reach chondrocyte nuclei and influence the transcriptional programs governing matrix synthesis and turnover. Published Khavinson data examines gene expression changes in chondrocytes, collagen and proteoglycan synthesis rates, and effects in age-related cartilage degeneration models. The data is primarily in vitro and in some Russian-language publications, though English-language work exists in gerontology and peptide biology journals. Note that Cartalax shares its sequence (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) with Cortagen — the same sequence, different tissue target, consistent with the Khavinson tissue-distribution hypothesis.

Cartilage is avascular and has limited regenerative capacity in adults — once chondrocytes are lost or the matrix degrades, conventional repair mechanisms are inadequate. The transcriptional programs in chondrocytes that govern type II collagen and aggrecan production deteriorate with age and disease. If short peptide bioregulators can influence those programs (the Khavinson hypothesis), cartilage becomes a compelling target precisely because pharmacological alternatives with similar mechanisms are lacking.
Chondrocyte homeostasis, extracellular matrix synthesis (type II collagen, aggrecan, proteoglycan content), and age-related cartilage degeneration models are the primary endpoints. Published Khavinson research has examined gene expression markers in chondrocytes and matrix composition in aging cartilage models. Musculoskeletal aging and avascular tissue bioregulation are the broader research categories.
