Bronchogen is a tripeptide (Ala-Glu-Asp) from the Khavinson bioregulatory peptide series, targeting bronchial and pulmonary tissue. The Khavinson framework — developed at the Saint Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology starting in the 1980s — mapped specific short peptide sequences to particular organs based on the hypothesis that cells can take up these sequences and use them to modulate tissue-specific gene expression. Bronchogen is the lung-specific entry.
The proposed mechanism is worth understanding clearly: these are not receptor-binding peptides in the conventional sense. The Khavinson hypothesis is that short peptide sequences (2-4 amino acids) enter cells, reach the nucleus, and interact with DNA promoter regions — modulating transcription factor access and altering which proteins the cell produces.
